PANORAMA OF THE EUROPEAN FILM

PANORAMA OF THE EUROPEAN FILM

Despite the fact that Egypt has the largest cinema audience in the Middle East and North Africa, the overwhelming majority of the films that have access to its market are either local productions or American blockbusters. European cinema is almost non-existent, enjoying only a minor share of the Egyptian film market despite its richness and diversity. The Panorama of the European Film offers the Egyptian audience a taste for European cinema through continuously exposing local audiences to a wider array of the most recent European productions (both fiction and documentary). This should eventually induce the demand for European films, creating the basic footsteps of a proper market for European films in Egypt.

There is little doubt that the greater introduction of the European film in the Egyptian market will also act as a catalyst for expanding the horizons of aspiring local filmmakers and writers by exposing them to new cinematographic languages and techniques which are particular to European cinema.

The first edition of the Panorama successfully took place in 2004, and three other editions have since followed, in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
